David Teter
While growing up in an artistic family, with an appreciation for good design, David began drawing and painting from a very young age. Art materials included any flat surface that could take mediums such as paint, crayon or pencil. Some of Davids earliest memories include finger painting whales to pass the time while imagining distant places.
During his early school years, his subjects came from many different sources of inspiration from art books to watching his parents draw and evolved over time into his own sense of style. One of his fondest memories is the many hours he spent during the school day drawing while the teacher was talking. While this behavior was not always engaging to the teacher, it prepared him for his future art career. One teacher in particular recognized his talent and requested David channel his ability into doing the class room displays for her at 14 years of age.
David drew anything that came to mind while in class; and born with an inquisitive personality, he communicated in a visual style. He kept busy experimenting with numerous styles and subjects. David was guided by both parents and is drawn to industrial and figurative art. His father, an industrial designer and his mother, a talented figure artist heavily influenced his love of art.
Following his passion and natural talent, David graduated from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena with a Bachelors degree in Illustration. His desire to be immersed in a creative field led to the decision to spend his lifes work in the fine arts. While attending Art Center, he learned the value in developing strong concepts for bodies of work. This has led to his current works which are represented as individual series as opposed to individual and separate works.
As an adult, David began his artistic career accomplishing a well rounded series of artistic endeavors, including commissioned portraits & paintings, full size murals, architectural renderings, commercial logos, illustrations, signage, and interior & landscape renderings for a variety of clients.
Currently, David has focused his fine art works on five genre’s; Industrial, Seascape, Cityscape, Landscape and Figure. These five genres are a vehicle for representing some other idea, impression or statement. While the image may be a cityscape, beneath the surface lies something more. It is the underlying meaning in an image that intrigues David. Taking time to examine his work on this basis is part of the pleasure of viewing his art.
His current body of work focuses on Industrial subjects; primarily architectural in nature, which illustrates the remnants of the industrial revolution and our changing world. This body of work represents the themes of old versus new when technology retires outdated articles in place of something more efficient. David has also explored other themes in his career; including a fascination with nature in unique circumstances not normally emphasized in art. His series of seascapes are painted from a unique perspective as if viewing the water far above the horizon line; and landscapes at a time of regeneration after a fire, illustrating the rebirth of the land, plants and animals.
David’s future is clear, as he continues to search for inspiration from unlikely sources and unlimited subjects; he gives the viewer a possibility of finding hidden meaning in the images while enjoying a journey along the way.
