Jill Hartley
Jill Hartley’s palette knife oil landscape paintings have been described as luminous, glowing and ‘straight-up Wyoming’.
“I am painting the landscape,” Hartley says, “but my real subject matter is Light.”
Hartley was born and raised in Colorado Springs, Colorado – the daughter of artists. After college in Colorado, she moved with her husband to Wyoming in 1976, living in Hanna, Glenrock and finally Rock Springs, where they purchased a small ranch near the Wyoming-Colorado border.
“The ranch is in a rocky canyon…what we don’t have in trees we make up for with rocks. My husband and sons just completed my new studio at the ranch and it is the most perfect place to paint – quiet and remote with lots of light.”
Jill’s painting technique involves plein-aire studies and photos which are used in the studio to create her finished work. The paint is applied to stretched canvas over a detailed drawing. She uses a painting knife exclusively with no underpainting or use of mediums. She only uses a brush to sign her paintings.
Hartley’s work has received numerous awards in western regional exhibitions. Most recent awards and exhibitions include:
- BEST OF SHOW Wild Horse & Western Art Show and Sale 2007, Rock Springs, WY
